the video/song that sparked my love affair with pete yorn. i saw him live for the fourth time in austin, tx this past saturday and every time i see him perform, it just makes me love his music even more and makes me realize i’m a bigger fan than what i think i am :p
“musicforthemorningafter” came out 10 years ago amidst the crashing rap metal of korn and limp bizkit and the sugar of pop acts like the backstreet boys and britney spears (all of whom i was listening to at the time). when i heard “for nancy (‘cos it already it is)” for the first time on mtv (you know, when they used to be about music and not crappy reality tv), i remember thinking, “i really like this and i don’t know why cos it’s so different than what i’m listening to now.” then the song got some play on la rock station KROQ and i remember loving it even more and finally breaking down and buying the CD. i would play that CD over and over again and shared it with someone who’s been a close friend since then. it was an album that i loved so much that i felt the need to share it with anyone who would listen to me flap my gums about it ;)
my relationship with this album is unlike any other - a game changer for sure. it and pete changed the way that i listened to music; what i looked for; what i wanted out of it; how i related to it overall. i have yet to come across an album that does what this album did and i don’t think i ever will.
